Update

Another lovely day in the garden, we have the tank set up now so I am using that to water the plants.
I have moved some very tough plants down the side, and they seem to be surviving, fingers crossed.

As well we have planted the Mango Tree aswe were able to pull down some of the old pool fence as a new one has been put in.
The seedlings in the front garden appear to be going well with plenty of Perpetual Spinach, Dwarf Kale and Turnips coming up, hopefully the carrots will succeed too.We have put some Wormwood cutting in the trenches to deter pests.

And finally we have planted a hanging bag of Strawberries and herbs, so it will be interesting to see how well this works, these are all plants propagated from the garden.

The WA Food Hedge 2008

Here are some photos of the setting up of the Food hedge in the front garden in WA. We have had some problems, with the lawn mower man slicing through bushes, as well as deciding to move trees that have been planted. But hopefully one day we will have a lush and productive food hedge which will provide a windbreak, shade and shelter too.

Fruit trees in the WA food garden

Growing Fruit Trees has been a rewarding and interesting experience, we are learning about new fruits all the time. Above is the back wall of the house in June 2008 with the first potted fruit trees and shrubs, on view are the Apple Trees, the Bay Tree, the Kaffir Lime and the Pepino bush. Below is a recent photo of one of the Apple trees growing along the wall, beside the pool.

And beside it the pot with Pizza Thyme, a Bay Tree and a Geranium is flourishing too.

Meanwhile the Pomegranate Tree is enjoying life on the front porch, lucky it likes hot weather as it bears the full brunt of the hot western sun all afternoon.

Eventually we plan on digging up the front lawn and having more food growing there, but as we are very close to the coast and face the West the wind and heat are a real problem. So we decided to plant a hedge, it includes a Mulberry Tree, and Almond Tree and quite a few Pineapple Guava trees. The photo below shows the hedge on the day that it was planted in August 2008
