Beetroots Gone Wild!

 We cleared out another section of garden which had been left for a while and found over 5 kilos of heirloom beetroots. The one above  was growing new beetroots from itself and I am wondering whether I should have just left it to see what would happen. Cannot help thinking that it looks like a  vegetable head that the children used to make.

I have now peeled and cooked a third of these and am making fritters for dinner, they tasted really nice still, despite not being the most beautiful plants on the planet...

The Greening of Gunnedah

The greening of Gunnedah continues with my lovely sister-in-law Deb now firmly in the grip of the gardening bug. She is doing such great things, from little things, big things definitely do grow- well done Deb. Now in her words....

" Thought I would send you some photo's of my efforts. The include the latest ones of the garden, plus I got 2 new garden beds ( have planted one, in the process of filling the other). As well the first beetroot. Baked it that night, it's was lovely."

We finally harvested some of our Beetroot that we have grown from seed, 2 kilos worth!

The Beetroot were roasted and put in a salad with Goats Cheese, and Olive Oil and Balsamic Vinegar, delicious.The young leaves were added to the green salad, whilst the older ones were blanched and put into the freezer to be used later on.

 You can see how rich and beautiful the Beetroot looks once cooked, it is extremely tasty too.

The Final Product

WA Update 15th August 2010

We are growing Snow Peas up the old pool fence and they have just started flowering, cannot wait until we have some to eat.

The Everlasting Daisies are looking blooming marvelous out the front, though they do seem to have enveloped  the Fig Tree!

Pulled all the  Purple Dragon Carrots out today and planted  Cylindra Beetroot and  Darwin and Cos Lettuce, The Perennial Spinach and kale are still flourishing.

The little garden we put beside the front porch is now doing well, the Basil is large and bushy and so is the Purple Sage, in the front you can see more carrots and our first Coriander grown from seed.

Have now cleared out two of the volunteer tomato bushes and planted Borlotti beans and Massey Gem peas which will hopefully grow up the fence. Have also planted some more Thyme and Oregano which will be a ground cover. Watered everything in with a seaweed mixture and added lots of shredded scrap paper and the contents of our new Bokashi bucket to the compost heap.

Update 1st August 2010 Mulberries and the rest

Here is our lovely Mulberry tree covered in new buds on a lovely sunny day.

And the new garden now has seeds in it, Rockmelon, Beetroot, Lettuce, Tomatoes, Capsicums and Italian Parsley.

And the new garden in the back yard is now finished and today we planted a Lillypilly, a Brazilian Cherry and a Ginko Berry shrub, as well some Peas, Lettuce, Tomatoes and Capsicum

 

And  we moved the Lemongrass from beside the pool and added some Geraniums.

And to finish here is one of the newly blooming Everlasting Dasies, beautiful.

Produce from our Garden 20/01/10

With so many people in the house and so much happening i am really pleased with how well the garden has managed with so little attention. Today I have planted lots of seedlings given as a gift by Ruth, Lettuces, Sage, Beetroot, Caraway, Capsicums and a Marshmallow plant. It was also my turn to cook so i picked ingredients as i planted this morning, and here are the results.
