Today's Harvest

Today we have harvested a basket of goodies, delicious, healthy and cheap.

The Importance of Vines

 

We currently have quite a few vines in our garden which serve multiple purposes. They provide shade, privacy,  soil protection, leaves, fruit and vegetables. Here you can see a sweet potato vine and the choko vine.

In the front yard we have a boston ivy on the walls to shade the walls that face the west, a grape vine, a pumpkin vine and a sweet potato vine.

In the back garden we have three grape vines, a choko vine, a virginia creeper shading the eastern wall, a sweet potato vine and a passionfruit vine. They are not only useful but beaiutiful and make use of space which would otherwise be wasted.

 The passionfruit vine appears to be dying off so we will need to plan on what to do there. We have moved one of the peach trees into the back garden and hope that we can save it.

 The fruit-salad plant is now very large, though not fruited but the banana plant has struggled in the cold weather that we have been having.

 The lillypilly in the back garden is growing very well, behind the blackberry is branching out everywhere, hopefully lots of tasty fruit again this year.

The vine on the back wall is just getting its leaves back and the kaffir lime and bay tree are happy, however the curry plant seems to be struggling a little, will try feeding and mulching.

Steamed Chokoes and Stewed Fruit

It was a wet and windy day outside today so I was pleased to be able to be able to cook some steamed Choko and stew apples, pineapple guavas and passionfruit, all from our garden, delicious.

Bananas and Passionfruits

Our passionfruit vine is now a dense and lovely screen for our pool area as well as producing lots of passion-fruits. Here you can also see that it has sheltered one of the small banana plants that we dug up from the main plant. Sadly the original plant looks very ragged and sad as it is exposed to too much wind, we will need to rethink the micro climate in that area!.

Passionfruit Flummery

Our Passionfruit vine continues to produce fruit, even though it is winter, and one of our favourite ways of using them is making a Passionfruit Flummery. This is an economical and tasty recipe which enables us to have a dessert that is also easy to make and reminds us of summer, even in this wet, windy Perth weather that we are now experiencing. The vine also has beautiful flowers and provides a lush, green privacy screen in our back garden.
